Brief Overview
The cross-horizon typology of rim types found on this page is designed to illustrate the variations in rim types during all periods at Mozan. Rim codes are assigned when the preserved portion of the sherd is insufficient to assign a shape, or in cases when the rim is used to further define or explain a particular shape. The lexicon gives the complete listing of rim codes and their associated definition. In addition, a list of shape codes including rims is further defined on the shapes-codes page. The selected examples here were chosen based on their ability to represent the specific rim types, rather than to indicate the complete chronological distribution of types.
The assigned types are general overarching categories that may embody variation although they share general characteristics. For example, within the category of beaked rim (----b) the beaked portion can be more or less pronounced. Within the simple rims (----s) there is also a variation from extremely simple rims, to those that are slightly rounded but still quite simple when compared to the range of other rims. In contrast, some rim codes were used relatively rarely and the range of variation within the type is not illustrated. Sometimes the variation within types leads to overlap of types. The handmade nature of the ceramics often leads to situations where the sherd is somewhere on the spectrum between two different shapes and the ceramics specialist, in these cases, must make their own best judgement as to type, creating some blurred edges among the categories.
